Master of Science in One Health

Introduction:

Somali National University (SNU) is pleased to announce the launch of a master’s degree program in One Health. SNU is committed to offering veterinarians, animal scientists, medical doctors, and biomedical and environmental scientists the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of One Health.

This innovative program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address complex health challenges at the interface of humans, animals, and the environment.

The concept of One Health recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, emphasizing the need for a multidisciplinary approach to address emerging health threats..

Objectives:

This program aims to:

  • Equip graduates with the knowledge, skills, and interdisciplinary perspective necessary to address One Health challenges in Somalia.
  • Foster collaboration between human health, veterinary medicine, environmental science, and social science professionals.
  • Build capacity for effective disease prevention, control, and surveillance at the human-animal-environment interface.
  • Promote the application of One Health principles to improve public health and animal health outcomes in Somalia.

Learning outcome:

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the One Health concept and its application in various contexts.
  • Understand the interconnections between human health, animal health, plant health, and the environment.
  • Analyze the factors that contribute to the emergence and spread of infectious diseases at the human-animal-environment interface.
  • Apply a One Health approach to complex health challenges using systems thinking and a transdisciplinary perspective.
  • Design and implement effective strategies for disease prevention, control, and surveillance at the human-animal-environment interface.
  • Collaborate effectively with professionals from diverse backgrounds, including public health, veterinary medicine, environmental science, and social sciences.
  • Communicate One Health concepts clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Advocate for collaborative and integrated approaches to address global health challenges.

Enrollment Criteria:

  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as Veterinary Medicine/Animal Science, Human Medicine, Public Health, Agriculture/Environmental Sciences.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a health-related field is preferred.

Program Duration:

The program will be offered for two years, specifically 24 months, starting in August of each year. The first year comprises course work and the second year shall be devoted to research and dissertation work.
